A fine violin labeled Johann Georg Thir, 1763.

Thir was known as the finest Viennese violin maker of the 18th century. He is known for his chocolatey brown varnishes and high arching. This violin has a high belly and back and a top of very fine grain. The back of has a tight flame while sides are a slightly wider stripe. Slightly narrow, it speaks in a soprano voice and would be a good instrument for a first violinist in a string quartet.

The instrument is in wonderful condition, with a few old repairs on the top and no scars on the back. The button has at some point separated slightly, likely due to the dowel inserted through it, though it is long stable. Currently strung with Larson strings.
