Description

John Norwood Lee Violin Bow

John Norwood Lee Violin Bow was made in 1979 by Chicago-based bow-maker, John Norwood Lee. It is an absolutely beautiful bow with lots of interesting features. For one, it is solid gold mounted. The frog is made of tortoise shell, giving it a unique and stunning look. The slide and eye are as equally distinct because they are made of black mother of pearl, which gives it a stained glass aesthetic. The eye is specifically a Parisian eye, and the black mother of pearl is encircled in a gold ring. The ferrule and heel plate of the frog are also gold. Going up the bow, you will notice another gold feature, the winding, matched by a leather grip. The stick is octagonal pernambuco, and at the tip you will find some more black mother of pearl. The screw of the bow is made of solid gold, with black mother of pearl facets. It is missing the side black mother of pearl facets, which can be seen in the pictures, but still contains the black mother of pearl button.

More about the maker, John Norwood Lee:

John Norwood Lee grew up playing oboe, and studied engineering. He began to play in an ensemble with a violin maker, who was in need of some tools. Lee cleverly constructed a tool for the luthier at his engineering school, and as a result, began to take an interest in violin building and repair. Soon, he snagged an apprenticeship at the famous Bein and Fushi, right as it opened. When he discovered his color-blindness would stunt his growth in restoring violins, he took an interest in restoring bows. Lee quickly picked up on rehairing bows, because he noticed some similarities to the process of making oboe reeds. After handling and restoring many great bows, Lee was able to pinpoint the qualities of a great bow and assumed he could copy these qualities to make bows himself. He assumed correctly! Bein and Fushi saw potential in his first bow and encouraged him to make bows to sell in their store. Through the platform of this prominent string shop, Lee was able to sell his bows to many fantastic string players!
